Nuyorican Poets Cafe: Poetry Slam

Good morning Dearies,

Last week I finally went to the Nuyorican Poets Cafe!!! I’ve always wanted to go there. I love poetry, especially spoken poetry.

I went with my good friend Ana. We try to get together once a month or once every two months. We have our families, we go to school and she works, so we’re constantly busy. So it’s always nice to get some time with each other!

The show was suppose to start at 10p, but ended up starting at 11p. Needless to say we were exhausted, being busy moms and all, but we kept our cool and patiently waited for it to start. The place wasn’t as I imagined. It was a lot smaller. Limited seating, which meant people sat on the floor, on speakers and stood up for two hours, listening to these poets. Luckily we found two seats near the stage. With the amount of people that were crammed in there, I’m happy to say I was not very anxious! I was more excited. The only time I realized I was a little anxious, was when I refused to walk through the huge crowds to go to the bathroom. I instead waited until the show was over. One thing at a time though, right?  ☺️

Before the poets came on stage, the DJ had us all stand up and jam out to Prince! That was fun! Then we jammed out so some oldies and afterwards, took our seats for the poets to come on. They were fantastic! With each word they uttered, a new emotion showed itself. It was heartfelt, painful, intriguing, funny and explanatory. I fell in love with poetry all over again.

I’ve always dreamed to one day stand up in front of a group of people and speak one of my poems. I’m not ready just yet, because you know, I still get terrified to public speak. But one day I will be brave enough to do it!

I had such a great night with my friend. I can’t wait to go back and hear more words. Until then, here are some photos and videos I took that night!
